New Features and Major Changes

Window Tamer 2.0 is the product of a complete rewrite of version 1.0. It offers better performance, support for Mac OS 8.5 Standard Views, multiple saved view settings, and contextual menu support, while still retaining compatibility with 1.x versions. Here is a brief overview of the major changes in version 2.0. For more complete information, see the Version History page, and, of course, the Window Tamer 2.0 User's Guide.

Saving Settings

In version 2.0, to save a window's settings, control-click in the window whose settings you wish to save. Choose Save View Settings... from the contextual menu's Window Tamer submenu, as shown below.

The Window Tamer control panel will launch, and you will be presented with the dialog shown below asking you to name the settings you wish to save. You may wish to give your settings a more descriptive name than My Settings. The limit on the name length is 255 characters, and all printable characters are allowed (so you may use colons until your heart is content.)

You can also choose how you would like the window to be positioned. See the topic Positioning 101 for more information. Once you have modified the information to your satisfaction, click the Save button.

Customizing (Taming) a Finder Window

Window Tamer 2.0 introduces a new, more powerful method of applying your settings to Finder windows. For those of you who like the 1.x method of clicking the window's zoom box while holding down a modifier, see the section on enabling Advanced Options in the User's Guide for information on how to enable this feature in Window Tamer 2.0.

In order to accommodate multiple saved settings, Window Tamer 2.0 includes a contextual menu plugin. To apply saved settings to a Finder window, simply control-click in the window you wish to modify, and move the mouse down to the Window Tamer submenu. You should see something like the following:

Your saved settings are listed at the top of the Window Tamer submenu. To apply settings, select the one you'd like to apply. Simple, huh?

If You Are Having Problems...

Window Tamer 2.0 attempts to convert your 1.x preferences. Your previous settings will be named Converted Settings. While you can continue to use them with no problems, I recommend that you re-save your settings to take advantage of the advanced options version 2.0 offers.

If Window Tamer 2.0 is exhibiting odd behavior, first try deleting the preferences. Open the Preferences folder inside the System Folder on your startup disk and locate the file Window Tamer Prefs. Drag this file to the trash and restart. You will not be able to empty the trash until you have restarted.

If you are experiencing any other problems, please don't hesitate to contact me.
